Do You Have The B.A.L.L.S. To Be A Leader?

I love the movie Glengarry Glen Ross and in one of the best scenes in the film Alec Baldwin (Blake) is really hammering the sales guys in a meeting about closing real estate deals. He asks the group, “Do you know what it takes to sell real estate?” He proceeds to pull out a pair of brass balls and says “It takes brass balls to sell real estate.” Now I am not in the real estate game. I leave that to my wife but I am in the world of coaching and training leaders to be effective in their roles.  Let me ask you, “Do you truly have the B.A.L.L.S. to be an effective leader?”

      You know what it takes to sell real estate? It takes brass balls to sell real estate.

Have you ever sat back and wondered if you really have what it takes to be a leader? Do you have what it takes to stand at the helm and steer the ship? Teams and organizations need leaders who can navigate the calm seas and tackle the roaring waves head-on. Ask yourself, do you truly have the B.A.L.L.S. to be an effective leader? I’m talking about Boldness, Authenticity, Love, Loyalty, and Service. Don't blush or giggle just yet. We’re all familiar with the figurative phrase of having balls or no balls to describe a person’s courage and commitment.  So, I’m about to break it down for you to see if you’re packing the essentials.

  • Boldness: Have the courage to make tough decisions and take calculated risks.
  • Authenticity: Being true to oneself and maintaining genuine relationships.
  • Love: Leading with compassion and care for team members.
  • Loyalty: Dedication to one's team and purpose helps to instill trust.
  • Service: Putting the needs of others first and serving with humility.

Boldness: The Courage to Step Up

Got guts? That’s the first part of the leadership package. Boldness is about having the spine to stand firm in the face of adversity. It's about being brave enough to make the tough calls and standing by them. It’s about taking calculated risks, not just swinging in the dark. Bold leaders are the ones who say “Let’s do this” when others hesitate. It’s about fostering innovation, embracing change, and, yeah, sometimes being the lone voice of dissent in a room full of nodding heads. Imagine being the first to dive into the deep end, confident that you’ll come up with a pearl. That’s the kind of balls I’m talking about because sometimes you have to be the one to be bold and stand on business.

Authenticity: Keeping It Real

Next up is Authenticity. If you’re putting on a show, trust me, your audience can tell. Can you look in the mirror and say you're the same person in every room? Being real means ditching the mask and keeping it 100. Authentic leaders don’t have a “work self” and a “home self”—they’re all-in, all the time, true to their core. It’s about knowing who you are and staying true to that, even when the pressure’s on to conform. Authentic leaders have their own their stories, their quirks, and their unique styles. It’s about showing up as yourself, not as someone you think you should be. And when the chips are down, authenticity is what makes people rally behind you because they believe in you—the real you.

Love: Compassion at the Helm

Now, don’t get sappy on me. Love in leadership isn’t about group hugs and Kumbaya. It’s not about sending heart emojis to your team. It’s about truly giving a damn about your people. Love is about fierce compassion. It’s about knowing your team’s dreams and struggles as well as you know your business goals. It’s putting people first, truly. Can you be tough when you need to, but also have your team's back? Do you invest in their growth, care about their wellbeing, and lead with empathy? That’s the kind of love that turns a group of individuals into a badass team.

Loyalty: Commitment to the Core

Loyalty in the leadership game is like having the secret cheat code to gain powerups and bypass levels. It’s about being dedicated to your cause and your team. It's standing shoulder to shoulder with your team in the face of challenges. Leaders who bleed loyalty inspire it. They create a circle of trust that’s impenetrable, a squad so tight-knit that ‘betrayal’ isn’t even in their vocabulary. When the going gets tough, are you sticking around? Because that's when your team really looks up to you. Leaders who stand their ground, even when the odds are stacked, earn the kind of respect that currency can’t buy.

Service: Leadership That Puts Others First

Service is about humility. It's about knowing that the spotlight's great, but it shines brighter on your team. Servant leadership is no fairy tale—it’s real, and it's powerful. It’s rolling up your sleeves, getting in the thick of it, and showing that no job is beneath you. Ever heard of leaders who serve rather than dictate? That's the gold standard. Putting the needs of your team and the mission before your ego isn’t just noble; it’s smart. Serve your team, serve the goal, and watch how that service comes back tenfold. It’s not just about lifting the bottom line; it’s about lifting people.

So, think you’ve got the B.A.L.L.S. for leadership? Leadership isn’t a crown; it’s a commitment. It’s a journey of growth, learning, and, yeah, sometimes a bit of stumbling. But with Boldness, Authenticity, Love, Loyalty, and Service in your kit, you’re not just ready to lead; you’re ready to inspire.

As we wrap this up, ask yourself: Are you ready to be that leader? Are you set to develop and demonstrate Boldness, Authenticity, Love, Loyalty, and Service? Are they already in your playbook, or are there some you need to work on? Leadership is a craft, and these traits are your tools.
